Towards L5 autonomous companies

In the next few years, every company will become an L5 autonomous company. This is what the journey from L0 → L5 would look like:

L0 Static Workflows

You’ve glued together no-code tools and scripts. They keep breaking the moment you go beyond 10 nodes. Most of the processes are still manual.

L1 Chatbots

You prompt an agent, ask questions, automate one off tasks. Every session starts from scratch. You are still doing most of the work with occasional help from the AI. This is equivalent of copy pasting on chatgpt / claude.

L2 Agents

You delegate tasks to agents. You go from prompt → automation. But you still need to prompt everytime, trigger workflows manually. Every agent session starts from scratch. Agents keep breaking, require decent engineering effort to keep running. Things are still messy, only a few AI pilled people in your company know how to make agents work. They run in silos while the rest of the company is playing catch-up.

L3 Proactive intelligence

Agents are omnipresent, perform scheduled tasks, react to messages and events. They don’t just handle chores, they go through analytics to surface insights, alerts before systems start breaking. This is when you start feeling the magic - tasks get automated end to end. Agents tell you what to work on. Your primary task becomes to unblock agents.

L4 Recursive self improvement

Agents share knowledge of past interactions, decisions, facts. They self reflect, write code and improve workflows with minimal human interaction. Sales, marketing, engineering, ops work on a shared knowledge substrate - better, faster decisions. You define taste, strategy and take critical decisions - agents handle execution.

L5 Compounding growth

Society of agents - coordinate with each other to achieve the final outcome. The system grows with you - compounding knowledge and wealth over time. Teams equipped with L5 autonomous systems achieve escape velocity.

This isn’t science fiction - we are already seeing flavours of this setup with claude code, openclaw, codex, etc. Engineers are trying their best to keep their agents running for as long as possible. The bottleneck for companies to go from L2 → L5 isn’t intelligence (we’re already here) - its infrastructure.

For a multi-human-AI collaborative workspace, you need to manage inference, agent harness, sandbox execution, auth, permissions, skills, shared context layer, orchestration, observability, evals and more. Most teams don't have the bandwidth to manage this.

That's why we built Ren - managed infrastructure for companies to build, deploy and work with agents across every business function, without engineering overhead.
